Slipping unnoticed into nature, Richtersveld is not just a destination but a journey to nature uncivilised. For that reason, we have selected it as a quiet yet exciting top destination for seniors. Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Trans frontier National Park is a geological wonderland comprising craggy mountains, open vistas, sandy plains and a water lifeline, the Gariep River, which borders its northern territory in South Africa. The Park is a shared conservation area between South Africa and Namibia, which includes Ai Ais and the Fish River Canyon on the Namibian side. Preparing for your journey in Richtersveld National Park Any senior traveller wishing to visit this harsh environment should plan and prepare meticulously before embarking on the journey. In preparation, one would need: Accommodation in the Park Sendelingsdrif is the border post between South Africa and Namibia and a ferry service is in operation, should one wish to further your travels to Namibia. There are various accommodation options in the Richtersveld, from camping to rustic chalets, and, although the amenities are basic, the chalet options are comfortable. Accommodation in chalets, which I recommend for senior travellers, can be booked through the South African National Park website. Sendelingsdrif is the headquarters and has suitable chalets, a petrol station, and basic supplies shop. Further into the park lies the camps of Tatasberg, on the Gariep River, and Gannakouriep (at the time of writing this camp is closed) in the central mountainous area. Campsites are available at Sendlingsdrif Rest Camp, De Hoop, Richtersberg, Potjiespram and Kokerboomkloof. Exploring the Richtersveld – Wildlife, Vegetation & Trails Good maps are available at reception, and the road signs are well marked; the beauty about the park is that you may alight from your vehicle to photograph and explore the area that you are in. The Richtersveld falls mainly within the Succulent Karoo Biome with some Nama Karoo intrusions from the east. The diversity of flora is remarkable with over 500 species on the checklist. Legend has it that the Nama fled into the Richtersveld from the north, and gazed back for one last time. The gods took pity on them and turned them into ‘halfmens’, a succulent synonymous with the park. Larger mammals are absent in the park but there are small herds of Mountain Zebra, Springbok, Vaal Ribbok, Kudu, Jackal, and smaller nocturnal creatures. Approximately 200 bird species have been reported, but this high number is attributed to the Orange River wetland area and its proximately to the Atlantic Ocean. Raptors include Jackal Buzzard, Black-chested Snake Eagle, Pale Chanting Goshawk, and Spotted Eagle Owl. Bustards, Chats, Larks, Bokmakerie and Bee-eaters are also recognisable birds to be found in the area. A Top Destination For Senior Travellers I can highly recommend a visit to the park, but avoid the months from December to March as recorded temperature of above 50% have been encountered. I visited the park in November 2023 where the average temperature was above 45 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures can get to below freezing at night, but with the right equipment, correct frame of mind and a sense of adventure, the park will enthral you with its many delights.
